AI for Development

Faculty Lead: Erik Wibbels

The explosion of new data sources and machine learning tools creates opportunities to understand and respond to development challenges in real time. PDRI-DevLab leverages AI and data science to enhance forecasting, evaluation, and program design.

Our work includes:

  • Using geospatial and satellite data to study land use, urbanization, and climate impacts.

  • Applying machine learning to detect civic space restrictions, political violence, and humanitarian risks.

  • Building real-time dashboards and early warning systems for policymakers and donors.

  • Training students and partners in the ethical use of AI for development.

Our projects connect Penn’s data science expertise with pressing global issues, bridging the gap between innovation and applied policy.
