PDRI-DevLab Fall 2023 Workshop Series: Emily Hannum

PDRI-DevLab is hosting a Fall 2023 Workshop Series featuring its staff and affiliates.

Topic: Natural Disasters, School System Resilience and Educational Outcomes in Asia

Presenter: Emily Hannum (Joint work with Yujie Zhang, Jere R. Behrman, Minhaj Mahmud, and Fan Wang)

Session Details: The Asia-Pacific region is experiencing more frequent and intense natural hazards and is the most disaster-prone world region. Educational impacts of natural hazards could be greater for children if their families have fewer resources with which to cope with disasters or if the institutions to which they have access are less resilient. Focusing on children ages 5 to 17 in seven countries in Asia, we link survey data on children to time- and geo-coded disaster variable. We estimate the heterogeneous impacts of natural disasters on school enrollment, grade progression and retention, and foundational learning skills for children along gender, age, and SES gradients. Finally, we consider the potential mediating effects of two indicators of low system resiliency—school shutdowns and instructor truancies—across children and localities.

We request that participants read the paper prior to the workshop.
