Penn Global Announces Opportunities for China-Focused Research and Teaching Support

January 2025

Penn Global is excited to announce two new opportunities to support China-focused research and teaching initiatives in collaboration with the Penn Wharton China Center (PWCC) in Beijing: a PWCC Residency Grant and PWCC Course Grant.  Aligned with our mission to promote the University’s global engagement, these opportunities aim to support Penn faculty, staff, and affiliates in their engagement with China.

Interested Penn affiliates are encouraged to contact Penn Global at global@upenn.edu for more details and to explore these opportunities further.

PWCC Residency Grant

A PWCC Residency Grant, administered by Penn Global, will provide Penn standing and affiliated faculty; graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows with funding to complete a residency up to 10 days at the Penn Wharton China Center. Residencies could be held at any time during the academic year.

During their residency, grant recipients must organize at least one public event held at the Penn Wharton China Center and one event or activity jointly organized with a Chinese partner institution. In addition, the grant may be used for:

  • Business-class airfare for faculty and senior administrators, or economy-class airfare for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows;
  • Accommodation and reasonable per diem.
PWCC Course Grant

A PWCC Course Grant, also administered by Penn Global, will provide Penn faculty and instructors from all Penn Schools to develop courses, based in Philadelphia and offered in-person, with a travel component to China that would make substantive use of the Penn Wharton China Center.

Preference will be given to courses that involve faculty or instructors from multiple disciplines and Penn Schools. The grant may cover expenses directly related to course development and implementation, including but not limited to travel to and from China, lodging, meals, and related activities consistent with University policies and practices. The grant may also cover expenses for multiple Penn affiliates who are directly engaged in the course development or implementation process. Proposals for these grants must include plans to make substantive use of the Penn Wharton China Center.

Other Opportunities

Penn Global also invites expressions of interest outside of these categories, particularly from faculty interested in organizing workshops or conferences utilizing the Penn Wharton China Center.

About the Penn Wharton China Center

The Penn Wharton China Center opened its doors in 2015 and builds on Penn’s 200-year history of collaboration with China in research and education. PWCC provides on-the-ground support for the growing numbers of programs and collaborations between Penn’s 12 schools and many academic, government, and business partners throughout China.

PWCC recently moved its offices to Unit 15&16 Level 31, Yintai Office Tower C, 2 Jianguomenwai Avenue, Chaoyang District, Beijing, 100022, China. The Center supports:

  • Academic programming, like Penn Global Seminars and China Education Initiative courses;
  • Key stakeholder events, such as Forerunner China;
  • Communications outreach to alumni and stakeholders in China
The Center also provides critical logistical (e.g., visa, travel, and event planning) support to members of the University traveling to China. For more information about ways in which you can work with the Center, please visit the Penn Wharton China Center website here.
