Youth unemployment in low-income settings is a persistent policy concern. Instead of a skill gap alone preventing young jobseekers from finding employment, recent work demonstrates that lacking key pieces of information at stages of the job search can also hinder job matching. In this project, I explore the role of information frictions in job descriptions in preventing first-time jobseekers in India from finding quality jobs which are a good fit for them. Partnering with a large Indian job board, I provide evidence of information frictions on the firm- and jobseeker-sides. I then propose strategies to examine why these information frictions may persist.
This session will be a seminar-style presentation of 40 minutes followed by Q&A of 20 minutes. Participants are not required to read the paper beforehand.

Andelyn Russell is a PhD student in Wharton Applied Economics. She is interested in labor markets, health, and gender in developing economies. Her current research examines how firm interventions can improve worker welfare, especially for vulnerable groups. Prior to joining Wharton, Andelyn was a research assistant in health economics at J-PAL North America. She also completed a B.S. in Operations Research from Columbia University.
